Ran during lunch today.  Once again, I felt pretty good so I pushed the pace a little harder.  I really need to start doing speedwork though.  The knee is doing fine.  It bothers me the most when I get up from my desk at work.  when I'm running, the ache seems to go away or become really minimal.  It's certainly not getting worse, so I'll keep running as long as it doesn't affect my stride or the pain gets too bad.

I know what you mean. Lately I've felt like a cold car that you don't want to push too hard.. just ease into the run, and usually by about halfway through I'm cruising, engine humming along nicely. I almost don't want to stop :)

the calling card of an ultrarunner...

:D. One can only dream! I just hope one day I can wake up and run far!! My motto: Be like SnoNevJim ;) just 3 of my 100 inspirations on FRB to go the distance.

Nevels, I'm an engineer as well, wanna hear my favorite engineering joke? Waht's the difference between a civil engineer and a mechanical engineer? Mecahnical engineers build bombs, civil engineers build targets. Ok, back to work building weapons of mass destruction.

From Nevels on Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 14:23:21

I've heard that one, and ironically enough, I am in the business of building the designated targets (although what I'm actually getting paid for is to figure out how to thwart you mech-e's and design said targets in such a way as to be slightly more impervious to the bombs).

I saw that you were a DoD guy, and since the folks I work for had a range out in Utah (at Hill AFB), I was wondering if that was where you were...

Actually I work for ATK Aerospace Structures in Clearfield, UT. I do drive past Hill AFB every day though. We build solid rocket motors for several military and commercial programs as well as composite structures for aircraft, both military and civilian. And we'll always figure out how to blow stuff up because that's fun.

From Nevels on Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 14:40:00

I agree; we enjoy figuring out ways to blow stuff up, too, because it is both fun and informative with respect to what we need to work on.

While I'm thinking about it, as an ultra guy, what race(s) would you say are worth a trip out West from the Southeast. I'm trying to plan for the next couple of years, and I have been wanting to find a good 100 out West. Western States is always and idea, but I figure that there are plenty good ones out there, and I am keeping my options open. Any recommendations?

There are a bunch of worthwhile races. I'm running Tahoe Rim for the second time this summer. Beautiful course, stunning views of Lake Tahoe, trails that are to die for, fantastic aid, think Ensure smoothies. I've heard Cascade Crest 100 is great but I haven't done it. Wasatch of course, but entry is closed for 2009, hopefully I get in again this year. Where's Waldo 100k in central Oregon is wonderful. Great scenery and aid. I'll beo going back for my 4th trip there this summer. California has tons of great runs. Angeles Crest (a little pricey), there's a couple of runs in teh Santa Ana mountains of Orange county. Mostly fire roads but some good trails as well. There's always my race the Antelope Island Buffalo Run. Way too much fun and free homebrew and buffalo stew at the end. I'm thinking about Big Horn in Wyoming this summer as well. So there's a few ideas to kick around.

From Nevels on Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 18:50:18

I'll keep those in mind for the next few years. It will be a while before I can get out there (finishing up the MS and talking myself out of staying on for the PhD), but whenever I get a chance, I'll try to hit some of those up.

Thanks.
