Jim,

Out of shear curiosity, do you have any really handy suggestions for a 24 hour run (the first 12 hours of which will be run alone)? I think my plan is to just go for a little jog and forget to stop, but I was wondering if you had any good tips from previous experience...

Hmmm, is this a race or just a 24 hour run for fun? The few 24 hour runs I've done have been on a track and races. Wow, handy suggestions. Have your aid close by so you can get it when you need to. Make sure you eat and drink regularly, real food, you know, pizza, hamburgers, shakes. At Across The Years they actually will serve meals. I've had lasagna, burritos, pancakes, etc. Works for me. Will anyone be able to cheer you on or give you encouragement during the first twelve hours? What my plan has been in the past is to run the first 50K pretty much non-stop, then run 5K, walk 1K, and repeat until I'm shot, then just stumble along until the race is over. I've ended up taking a short 45 minute nap sometime in themiddle of the night, which is always my downfall because I figure I can get another 3 miles if I didn't do that. So take caffeine as well. Hope that helps some. Good luck

It's the Delano 12 (delano12.com) 12 hour race, and I'm doubling it by going out 12 hours early (the race starts at 6am Saturday, so I'm starting at 6pm Friday). Basically, I'm killing two birds with one stone: satisfying my curiosity about running a 24 hour by doing it, and using it as a fundraiser (check http://letsgoforarun.blogspot.com/2010/02/delano-day.html). That being the case, it's kind of a half-race...

In any case, it's a one mile cinder path, and I'm planning on having a table set up with my stuff laid out in a semi-organized manner. I like your idea for real food; I tend to go for the real stuff (mostly pb&j) in ultras anyway, rather than Gu. I think I'll have a few people out there for the first few hours (maybe 6 - midnight), but I suspect I'll be on my own from midnight until people start showing up for the actual race, maybe around 5. I bet I can get one or two of the folks who come out early to bring me a large pizza to graze on through the night (good idea, pizza has helped late in 50-milers for me before...)

As far as running strategy, my plan is somewhat similar to yours, I was shooting to get a solid 20-40 miles before settling into a walk-run pattern, and I'd like to have somewhere between 60 and 70 done before the actual race starts.

And yes... I'll have caffeine, although I'll probably try to hold off until after midnight... maybe...

Thanks.
