Well, I did it.  35 miles on the treadmill.  Total time 6:05.  Not as bad as I thought, but TV land is a wasteland on Sunday's.  I set up a little aid station next to the treadmill with my drinks and a few snacks.  My wife checked on me occasionally, would just shake her head and go back upstairs.  She just doesn't understand, but maybe neither do I.  Here's the numbers:  120 oz of fluid, 80 oz of it was Heed.  Calorie intake, around 600-700 total.  I watched some show on the Titanic on the History channel, a 2 hour Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (pretty good, I'm going to record it next time) concert, a Red Bull winter surfing contest in Nova Scotia, and part of Kill Bill, Part 1.  I actually don't feel too bad.  A little tired and chafed, but I imagine I'll sleep pretty well tonight.  This is my last really long run before my race on New Year's Eve.  Next week I go 25 miles for the long run.

35 miles on the treadmill has got to be some sort of record, at least on the fastrunningblog. Very impressive.

From jtshad on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 10:15:04

ARE YOU NUTS? 35 mile and 6 hours on a treadmill is insane!! I know the weather wasn't the best in Utah over the weekend, but dang man!?!?!?

From cody on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 10:31:56

Wow, that's all I have to say!

From Jim on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 11:28:04

What can I say? I weenie out in cold weather, I'd much rather sweat inside than be cold outside.

From Cal on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 15:43:01

Nice job Jim. That shows some real dedication.

Where is your New Years Race located?

From Jim on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 17:59:15

Thanks Cal,

The race is called Across The Years. It's a 24, 48, and 72 hour race near Phoenix. I'm running the 24 hour one. I ran the same race a couple of years ago and had a great time. The website is www.acrosstheyears.com. There's a coupel of runners that may be going for new American records in the 24 hour. That means around 165 miles. My goal is 110 miles.

HOLY COW!!! YOURE MY HERO!!! How do I get into the ultra scene? I bought a copy of trail runner at work yesterday (I work at a borders so it made sense); But I need to figure out what to do for winter training and what not. My goal is to set a huge PR in the marathon in October and hopefully earn a BQ!!! But I think in order to do it I'm going to have to log big miles in the spring/summer. I have done 2 50+ mile weeks in a row, though this week with finals and graduation I'll be lucky to hit 40 :- I'm going to try my hardest though.

You guys that run all the 100 milers and beyond make me awestruck. I only wish I can oneday do some kind of a race like that!

We all grovel at your feet--Ultrajim, KING OF THE TREADMILL! I am feeling inspired!

From Jim on Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 09:54:09

At least I'm king of something! No groveling allowed.

Benn, sign up for a 50K, if you've run a marathon, you can run a 50K. It's only 8k beyond a marathon. Training - train like you would for a marathon except your long run needs to be longer. for a 50K, take your long run out to around 25 miles, for a 50 mile, take it out to around 30-32, for a 100k, I usually go out to around 35 or so, and for a 100 mile I like to get in a few in the 35-45 range. You can certainly do the races on less, I've done a 100 mile with one long run of 28. I didn't do well, but I did finish. The one thing about ultras, there is no guarantee of a finish. The average finish rate for a 100 mile is around 65% vs. 98% for a marathon. Go to www.run100s.com for a lot of good info on ultras.

Nice workout. When you setup an aid station next to your treadmill do you stop to drink or eat. It's probably easier than in an actually race to grab water or food. Very impressive and I hope your new years run goes well.

From Jim on Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 16:25:00

What I did was to keep a couple of bottles handy, one on the treadmill, one on the table, then just had a few snacks on the table. If I wanted a little break, similar to pulling into an aid station, I would either pause for a minute, or slow the treadmill down to a walk. I think the longest I actually stopped was around 2-3 minutes when I had to go upstairs to refill the bottles. I was definitely glad when I was done.
